Ming Dynasty Bowl

Jiajing Period 1522-66

Blue and White floral decoration with Buddhist symbols.

5.75 inches diameter, 2.5 inches height

Good condition with some age cracks.

Interior floral scene of lotus leaves surrounding a single lotus blossom. Just above the blossom is the Buddhist symbol 'Dharma', one of the 8 Buddhist symbols that were used for decoration during certain Ming reigns.

There are a few age cracks and some discoloration where the biscuit was exposed during firing. Aside from normal wear and one small (and very old) repair to the rim, overall condition is very good.

The exterior decoration shows various Buddhist symbols alternating among a scrolling vine of lotus blossoms and leaves. Just below is a ruyi-head band. Most literature says the ruyi-head band first appeared during the reign of Changhua, this is incorrect. It has also been found on early Ming and Yuan dynasty pieces as well. The ruyi-head band shown on this bowl is most common on pieces from the Jiajing and Hongzhi reigns. The availability of the bright Mohammedan blue during Jiajing and the previous reign of Hongzhi is evident as compared to the native cobalt used during the preceding Interegnam period, as well as that of Chenghua.
